MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – In its third year, Memphis Grizzlies shooting guard Desmond Bane is back with his Bane’s Backpack event, helping parents and students kick off the new school year.
Saturday, at the family-friendly event, there were high spirits for the start of the new school year.
“It’s crazy, you know I remember being in those shoes,” Bane said. “Seeing the smiles on these kids faces is priceless, I haven’t been in Memphis too much this summer.”
Right in time for the start of the school year, hundreds flooded the Memphis Sports and Event Center for Bane’s annual Back-to-School Giveaway event for MSCS families.
“The excitement, shock, the freeness to be in an environment like this that’s healthy and positive, it’s hard to even put into words,” Bane said.
There were 30 plus vendors offering backpacks, school supplies, immunization shots, and assistance with the school registry. Some parents described the event as a one-stop shop.
“Like I said, I’m just ready and excited,” Jasmine Bean said. “I think the children need to experience the things that we can do together as a community for our children. I have my three children here today just for them to come out and have fun and get the free backpacks and supplies.”
The cherry on top was when the kids got a chance to interact with Bane one-on-one.
This is a moment Bane said he doesn’t take for granted.
“Having people that I looked up to and thought the world of and never getting the chance to meet them or interact with them,” Bane said. “But the fact that they do and I get to shake their hand and take a picture with them means the world to me.”
This year’s event continues his annual “Bane’s Backpacks” event, which he has hosted for the past three years.
